Wrought with Flowers of Black Silk by Prudence Catesby

This publication includes an introduction to blackwork embroidery, a note on sumptuary law as well as a chapter on patterns. Information is given for working the embroidery including stitches for outlines and stitches for metal threads. Three separate appendices are included: A Black Worke for the Queen which lists the blackwork items given to Queen Elizabeth as New Year's gifts during her reign; Pattern Outline Sketches which provides outlines from fillwork-style blackwork embroideries; and Diaper Patterns from existing embroideries as well as from portraits of embroidered garments. An excellent bibliography is also included.
