Why Call It Blackwork? by Marion Scoular

One of my favorite books on the subject, this book from Marion Scoular starts at the beginning with a history of the art of blackwork. She is very thorough in her explanation of the practices used in working this form of embroidery including proper equipment (fabric, threads and needles), reading a graph and the sequence and tension of the stitching. This is followed by an explanation of blackwork patterns in general including density, types (diaper, repeat and linear), choice of pattern, positioning the pattern for both overlapping shapes and separated patterns, shading, compensation and much more! Finally, she gives 144 patterns suitable for filling stitches, 30 patterns suitable for borders, over 30 motif patterns, an alphabet pattern and 10 darning patterns. 3 projects included.
