Thread Winders: A Collector's Guide by Diane Pelham Burn

Thread winders were made from an astounding number of different materials; from abalone to zebrawood, from straw to semi-precious stone, from paper to porcelain. And the decorative techniques used were just as diverse; winders were carved, cast, engraved, incised, inlaid, lacquered, painted, printed, pressed and turned. They were produced in the workshops of professional craftsmen from rare and exotic materials, both natural and man-made, and by amateur artists and obliging handymen using whatever was available at home. This book showcases these old winders displaying the variety of shapes. materials and craftsmanship.
