The Tapestry Collection: Medieval and Renaissance by G. F. Wingfield Digby

It is more than fifty years since the Victoria and Albert Museum last issued a catalogue of its tapestry collection. Since that time the collection has more than doubled, by the addition of such world-famous examples as the early 15th century Hunting Tapestries, formerly owned by the Dukes of Devonshire, and many splendid tapestries from later periods. The collection is now too large to be conveniently catalogued in a single volume and this first volume of the new catalogue is devoted to Gothic and Renaissance tapestries down to the end of the sixteenth century. The author, George Wingfield Digby, was Keeper of the Department of Textiles from 1946 to 1972 and was thus responsible for the acquisition of a number of the tapestries which he catalogues here. His copious analysis of the subject matter, style, date and attribution of each piece results in a catalogue unusual for its breadth of discussion. All of the tapestries are illustrated.
