Samplers from A to Z by Pamela A. Parmal

In 1877, an eighteenth-century sampler by the Boston schoolgirl Ann Wing became the first piece of needlework to enter the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Ann Wing's sampler, with its finely embroidered alphabet, religious verses and floral borders, set a high standard for future acquisitions. Since then, the Museum's collection of samplers has grown to over three hundred. This book, primarily written as an introduction to samplers and their history, is an exploration of their geographic, cultural and technical diversity.
