Translated "Letter by Letter", this book is a fascinating account of the use of samplers in the education of the girls in Friesland. It is filled with color photographs of some of the finest examples of needlework wrought by these girls. Although the text in the main portion of the book is in Dutch, there is a 6-page English "synopsis" contained at the back of the book which covers the history of samplers in education, Frisian samplers, the collection at the Fries Museum, the research, the different sources of learning needlework, a brief account of needlework as "woman's work", motifs used in the samplers, regional differences and the materials used for the samplers. Also included with the book is a double-sided pattern for the sampler shown in the last photograph.
