Homespun and Blue: A Study of American Crewel Embroidery by Martha Genung Stearns
Crewel Embroidery, a popular art in England from Tudor times, was brought to this country by the early settlers who developed their own style of work, using primitive materials - homespun wool and dyes made from native plants of which indigo was probably the most reliable. This book, which tells the story of early American work, is a fascinating account which will be of interest to collectors and students of Americana as well as to the many people who are doing crewel embroidery today in a revival of this beautiful old art. Much of the history of New England and America is recorded in the samplers, rugs, curtains and coverlets described and illustrated.
