Homage to Amanda: Two Hundred Years of American Quilts from the collection of Edwin Binney, III & Gail Binney-Winslow

This catalog was produced on the occasion of an exhibit of American quilts from the collection of father and daughter collectors Edwin Binney, III and Gail Binney-Winslow. The first grouping entitled "Early Techniques and the Colonial Heritage" showcases quilts utilizing the technical variations of "stuffed work", glazed wool worsted, stencil work, crewel work, candlewick and Broderie Perse. The second grouping, "Quilts Come of Age", were chosen to demonstrate the gradual disappearance of the techniques in group one and replacement by patterns and styles that are easily recognizable today including Star of Bethlehem, Sunburst, Mariner's Compass, Princess Feather and Feathered Star. The third grouping highlights Americana and Victoriana and the use of silk taffetas and satins on both crazy quilts and even fancy quilts in more conventional patterns. Also underscored in this period is the accent on patriotism with the use of our flag's colors on quilts. The last grouping focuses on the turn of the century and later including the brilliant quilts of the Amish and Mennonites.
