Flemish Tapestry by Guy Delmarcel

Flemish tapestry is one of the most luxurious and skillful textile traditions in the world. At the height of their popularity, these sumptuous decorative panels were in overwhelming demand from wealthy and royal patrons for whom the tapestries represented the height of opulence and prestige. This lush volume is the first comprehensive reference to provide an overview of Flemish tapestry history, spanning the fifteenth century to shortly before the French Revolution. Each gorgeously illustrated chapter discusses different production centers and documents workshops, designers, patrons, iconography and use. The wealth of illustrations include not only famous but also little-known and previously unpublished tapestries. The tapestries were traditionally made in sets and a number of beautiful complete sets are reproduced here, with many full-page reproductions and close-ups of the smallest details. A full reference section completes the volume.
