Decorative Motifs from the Southern Backcountry 1750 - 1825 by Kay Moss
This book is one of a series of publications of the Schiele Museum 18th-Century Backcountry Lifeway Studies Program. The book introduces the backcountry and the people and is followed by an extensive discussion of the motifs including: the zigzag family of motifs, curvilinear family motifs, elemental pan-human designs, heart, circular devices: celestial, floral, geometric, Fylfot cross, botanical motifs, animals and symbolism. This is followed by a discussion of the objects including gravemarkers, manuscripts, textiles, furniture, tools and accessories and architectural ornament. The conclusion discusses motif, motive, material and method. The appendix includes a discussion of methods: compass constructions, graphed motifs and ornamental penmanship.
