The Complete Book of Hardanger by Janny Geldens

The Complete Book of Hardanger features ten lessons from a mistress of the craft, Janny Geldens, a well-respected needleworker and teacher. The book begins with the basics, such as 'how to thread a needle', and 'how to keep the twist in a thread', then gradually becomes more advanced as each lesson is presented. Easy-to-read graphs accompany all of the samples in the early chapters, only those that offer something new in the later chapters. Chapter Five presents a gallery of twenty-five projects that Janny has designed and embroidered, with graphs where necessary to show which stitches were used. (A note about the author: I found just as interesting as the book that Ms. Geldens spent four years as a prisoner-of-war when the Japanese Army invaded The Dutch East Indies. She was interned in prison camps, suffered great privations and, of course, was unable to indulge in her great love of embroidery. Hardanger is possibly Janny's greatest love and her desire to teach others has culminated in this book.)
