Classic Needlework: Contemporary Designs Inspired by the American Past by Judith Grow
From crewel bed hangings to Talish rugs, Chinese Export porcelain to Pennsylvania German fraktur - the American past offers a vast array of classic designs. For the first time ever beautiful patterns derived from unusual eighteenth- and nineteenth-century sources have been translated into needle and thread. Following a brief history of American needlework are chapters on the basics, 36 stitches are explained in explicit detail and general techniques are explained. This overview is followed by a wonderful chapter of designs based on period classics: crewel bed hangings, bed rugs, Bargello purses, Chinese export plates, Talish rugs, Whig Rose coverlets, fraktur certificates and many more. Each of these period classics forms the basis for the contemporary projects included.
