Broderies Colbert

I must say that with this book I am intrigued. I purchased this title for the website on the recommendation of a supplier and am simply in awe of the gorgeous embroideries found within. However, the book is in French and I have not located a good description of this form of embroidery in any of my books. It is a counted thread technique about which I would love to know more. If anyone knows a source for further information regarding this form of embroidery (in English) and will email and let me know, I will be glad to post that information here. In the meantime, enjoy the photos (which do not do them justice!) of the projects included in the book.

UPDATE: Thanks to Jennifer Core of the Tennessee Sampler Survey for providing the following information:

Colbert embroidery dates back to the 19th century and is a counted thread technique which imitates lace. The design is traced onto the ground fabric (linen or Congress Cloth) and is stitched using stem stitch (or some type of outline stitch). The background around the design is stitched using counted stitches such as cross stitch, satin stitch and/or darning stitch. The background filling stitches around the design are stitched in colored threads. This is a very refined embroidery style suitable for both interior decoration and personal accessories. For embroidery fans, this book offers a chance to learn or master a new and unusual technique. Eighteen beautiful models are reproduced and include both square and circular designs.
